29 June: David Byrne and his “American Utopia”
Everyone knows David Byrne as the lead singer and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads. At Gent Jazz Festival, the multi-instrumentalist, who keeps an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe on his mantelpiece, will perform his first solo album in 14 years, “American Utopia”. Byrne himself describes the tour that accompanies it as his most ambitious show since ‘Stop Making Sense’. On the Garden Stage, we get to admire Soulwax protegee Charlotte Adigery aka WWWater. A natural talent with a hypnotic voice on spiky electronics. This Belgian Solange leaves no one indifferent. The funketeers of JtotheC, the band around Jonas Casier, will bring three sets of their Power Funk. Highly groovy and fresh singalong melodies set the right tone for this first day of Gent Jazz Festival.

Selah Sue & Blackwave. turn last festival day into a hip-hop feast with The Roots
Hip-hop legends The Roots already confirmed their presence on the last day of Gent Jazz Festival on Sunday 8 July. This final day will only be made better by our very own Selah Sue and Blackwave. After years of intensive touring, Selah Sue took a break for a while and became a mother in 2017. The boost she needed to come back stronger than ever. She will bring more intimate versions of her hits and some brand new work. Back to the basics, in all purity. With the catchy ‘BIG Dreams’, the Antwerp hip-hop duo Blackwave. quickly turned the Belgian music scene upside down. A million Spotify streams and a sold out Vooruit concert hall later, their eight-piece band is ready to have Gent Jazz Festival grooving.
