JAZZ MIDDELHEIM completes its line-up with Archie Shepp, Jazz Loves Disney, Steve Coleman, Fred Hersch, Robin Verheyen, …
The sun’s out and Antwerp summer feels closer than ever! No reason to seek happiness abroad, Park Den Brandt is where dreams come true. On 11 August, everyone’s inner child will love Jazz Loves Disney, which brings Disney standards back to life. Top notch jazz pianist Fred Hersch enchants the festival with his Trio, saxophone players Robin Verheyen, artist in residence this year, and Ben Sluijs do the same in Quartet formation. On Sunday 12 August, living legend Archie Shepp concludes the festival by paying tribute to the great saxophone master John Coltrane. The Verheyen-Baron-De Looze Trio has two of Belgium’s most prominent jazz players (saxophone and piano) join forces with American drummer Baron. Belgian trio Aka Moon and the avant-garde Mâäk Spirit respectively celebrate their 25th and 20th birthday at Jazz Middelheim. On 10 August, Logan Richardson joins jazz trio FONS., a coaching project in collaboration with the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Jazz fans all around, unite! The 37th edition of Jazz Middelheim takes place from 9 to 12 August in Park Den Brandt in Antwerp. Tickets, including multi-day passes, are available on www.jazzmiddelheim.be and at Fnac.
11 August: everybody wants to be a jazz cat!
No matter what language you speak, Disney songs are engraved in our collective memory and passed on from generation to generation. The project Jazz Loves Disney by The Amazing Keystone Big Band honours the most beautiful Disney classics. Some of the best vocalists such as Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, Melody Gardot and our very own Selah Sue were all too happy to lend their voices to their two albums. This summer, Hugh Coltman, China Moses (daughter of Dee Dee Bridgewater!), Myles Sanko and two surprise guests will join the big band in Antwerp.
Fred Hersch, teacher of Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson (Bad Plus), among others, was once described by colleague Jason Moran as the piano version of Lebron James: “Pure perfection”. In 2006, Belgium’s best-known saxophonist Robin Verheyen swapped our country for New York. Together with Marc Copland on piano, Drew Gress on bass and legendary Billy Hart on drums, he returns to Antwerp as Robin Verheyen Quartet. In his new quartet, Ben Sluijs is assisted by expert drummer Dré Pallemaerts and young wolves Bram De Looze and Lennart Heyndels on piano and double bass. Poetic and sometimes mysterious and meditative jazz ensues.
Saxophone in all its glory on 12 August
Adolphe Sax would have been proud! Sunday 12 August, also the last day of the festival, is almost entirely dedicated to the saxophone. When one saxophone legend honours another, you know jazz history is being written. Archie Shepp’s Tribute to John Coltrane is a once in a lifetime concert. Before that, Steve Coleman & The Five Elements will take over the Main Stage. For many of his contemporaries, saxophonist Coleman fits in the same list as Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and, also, John Coltrane. Saxophonist Robin Verheyen and pianist Bram De Looze team up with American percussionist and lifelong sparring partner of John Zorn, Bill Frisell & Marc Copland, Joey Baron. The Main Stage will be opened by Aka Moon, the Belgian jazz trio that integrates Eastern and African rhythms into their repertoire, producing a unique sound.
On the Club Stage, Mâäk Spirit celebrates its twentieth anniversary. As one of the most active avant-garde jazz formations in Belgium, they perform in four different set-ups: Mâäk 4tet, Mâäk Five, Mâäk Quintet and finally their Big Ensemble!
Artist in residence Robin Verheyen and coach Logan Richardson
For the 37th edition of Jazz Middelheim and according to the yearly tradition, there will be an artist in residence who will present his oeuvre in various forms and settings. This year Jazz Middelheim is delighted to host Robin Verheyen, who will be performing with TaxiWars (09/08), Robin Verheyen Quartet (11/08) and Verheyen-Baron-De Looze Trio (12/08).
Every year Jazz Middelheim shines its spotlights on fresh jazz talent from the Antwerp Royal Conservatory. FONS. is a jazz trio that consists of (former) conservatory students Lennert Baerts (saxophone), Gert-Jan Dreessen (drums) and Jeroen Reggers (guitar). Their contemporary jazz with strong grooves will be coached by Logan Richardson, with whom they will meet for the first time in May. The saxophonist and composer from Kansas City played live and in the studio with music masters such as Joe Chambers, Butch Morris, Ambrose Akinmusire, Nasheet Waits, Billy Hart and Jason Moran.
