LUWTEN presents single ‘DON’T BE A STRANGER’ from ‘DOOR’ EP

Luwten, aka Tessa Douwstra, has released single “Don’t Be A Stranger” along with the announcement of her Door EP coming September 11th on Glassnote Music.

By splicing artificial sounds with organic instrumentation, samples and field recordings, Luwten’s brand of abstract pop explores one of life’s bigger emotional beats: how to reconcile a yearning for both solitude and companionship. Douwstra elaborates on that theme by sharing,  “I’ve always thought that it was important to do everything on your own as much as possible. That mindset has helped me to focus but also left me feeling quite lonely at times. A human being can become lonely so easily. The expression ‘don’t be a stranger’ captures that human longing to not be alone so beautifully I think. How to make sure friends don’t turn into strangers? And how to turn strangers into friends?”

It’s a quandary the world of today is suddenly coping with on a massive scale. Though the balance between spending time alone and with others is ever-changing, Douwstra finds solace in small, bemused observations she can clutch onto like cherished mementos.

In fact, some of Luwten’s songs stem from using actual mementos.“‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ was born from an experiment with my grandmother’s old tape recorder,” Douwstra reveals. “There was some awful yodel music on the cassette, but then when I rewound it and pressed play, I heard a two-second recording of a male choir. I sampled just that small part and that became the “ahay” you hear in the song’s theme and chorus.“

The rest of her forthcoming EP will continue to explore the search for that equilibrium between having control and accepting the unknown…like a door being left a tiny bit open for a breeze to blow through.

“Don’t Be A Stranger” is the third single released off of the forthcoming EP. It was preceded by the release of double single “Control/Airport” which were both met with great praise.

In addition to the 185K+ views on the video for “Control,” the track  was launched as a World First on Beats 1 during which host Zane Lowe declared Luwten “incredible!” The song also earned a feature on the cover of Spotfy’s New Music Friday billboard in the Netherlands. The video for “Airport” premiered on American Songwriter, who deemed it “much like modern art.”

The songs have received playlist adds from Apple MusicAmazon, Deezer and YouTube MusicSpotify added the song to their New Music Friday Playlist in the US, CA, UK, NL, BE, NA, Gulf and Egypt as well as radio play at KUTX, WUNC-H2, WCLX, KCMP, WFMU, KROX, KJAC, WPYA-F2 and WNRN.
