Selah Sue and Ben l’Oncle Soul join Jazz Loves Disney on the JAZZ MIDDELHEIM stage!

Disney melodies, whatever language sung in, are engraved in our collective memory. With their Jazz Loves Disney project, the seventeen-piece The Amazing Keystone Big Band from France breathes new life into Disney classics. On Saturday 11 August, the marvellous voices of Hugh Coltman, China Moses (daughter of Dee Dee Bridgewater!) and Myles Sanko are bringing the party. Our very own Selah Sue and Frenchman Ben l’Oncle Soul complete this impressive list. This evening will undoubtedly be one of the most enchanting ones in Jazz Middelheim’s history. The 37th edition of Jazz Middelheim takes place from 9 to 12 August in Park Den Brandt in Antwerp. Tickets, including multi-day passes, are available on www.jazzmiddelheim.be and at Fnac.

So this is love, sings Selah Sue

When Disney asked Selah Sue to interpret the Cinderella classic “So This Is Love” on Jazz Loves Disney’s second album, she didn’t hesitate for a second. As a new mother, she completely adheres to the message of unconditional love the song exudes. The key to all heaven is ours, because Selah is coming to Jazz Middelheim on Saturday 11 August to charm us with her miraculous voice. Ben l’Oncle Soul shifts the tempo up a gear and will bring the Jungle Book singalong “I Wanna Be Like You”. The Frenchman opened at Montreal Jazz Festival, knows Frank Sinatra’s repertoire by heart and can effortlessly fill the Zénith in Paris. That same Saturday, Fred Hersch Trio, Robin Verheyen Quartet, Ben Sluijs Quartet and Sylvain Rifflet will also perform.

Jazz Middelheim, green oasis for music lovers

In 3 weeks and for the 37th time, Jazz Middelheim will be turning the Antwerp Park Den Brandt into a green oasis for jazz lovers who like to think outside of the box. On 9 August, hip-hopers Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli will put on their legendary Black Star suit and set fire to the tent with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from Chicago. All chairs aside that day, because Kamasi Washington, TaxiWars, Bram Weijters’ Crazy Men and the youngsters of Steiger, MDC III, Dijf Sanders and Nordmann, make it impossible to sit still.

Friday 10 August goes black-yellow-red, because the best of the Belgian scene is filling up the park. After her widely acclaimed performance in 2016, Melanie De Biasio will undoubtedly be another festival highlight. For the first time ever live, Philip Catherine will bring together the artist line-up of his legendary LP ‘September Man’ (1974) for his Reunion Band. Jazz trio De Beren Gieren will show us why they just won the Klara Prize for Best Belgian Jazz-cd with their new album ‘Dug Out Skyscrapers’. On the Club Stage, Brussels Jazz Orchestra will celebrate their 25th birthday with four diverse projects: We Orchestrate Words, We Have A Dream, Kaneelvingers and Footprint.

Sunday 12 August is almost entirely dedicated to the saxophone. When one saxophone legend honours another, you know jazz history is being written. Archie Shepp’s Tribute to John Coltrane is a once in a lifetime concert, accompanied by trumpeter Randy Brecker. Before that, Steve Coleman & The Five Elements will take over the Main Stage. For many of his contemporaries, saxophonist Coleman fits in the same list as Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and, also, John Coltrane. Saxophonist Robin Verheyen and pianist Bram De Looze team up with American percussionist and lifelong sparring partner of John Zorn, Bill Frisell & Marc Copland, Joey Baron. The Main Stage will be opened by Aka Moon, the Belgian jazz trio that integrates Eastern and African rhythms into their repertoire, producing a unique sound. On the Club Stage, the avant-garde Mâäk celebrates its twentieth anniversary in four different sets.
